Onguma Trails Camp - A Walking Safari Experience in the Namibian Bush
Trails Camp is for guests who want to spend their days on foot. A small, eco-conscious glamping camp with just four en-suite bell tents, it offers a focused two to three night walking safari experience that combines genuine adventure with the comfort and hospitality Onguma is known for. Maximum of eight guests, no children under 16, and a daily rhythm built entirely around the bush.
Eco-luxury and Conservation
Trails Camp operates on solar power and is built around sustainable practices designed to minimise environmental impact. It reflects Onguma’s broader conservation ethos: a working reserve that takes its responsibility to the land seriously, without asking guests to sacrifice comfort in the process.
The Tents
Four spacious classic bell tents accommodate a maximum of eight guests. Each tent includes:
- Extra-length beds with sumptuous bedding
- Private en-suite outdoor bathroom with hot bucket shower
- Private wood-fired hot tub
- Seating area in front of the tent overlooking the wilderness
The Experience
2 Night Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival Meet your guide at Onguma Forest Camp at 13:00 for a transfer to Trails Camp. A light lunch is followed by a sundowner drive or afternoon walk, and dinner at camp to close the evening.
Day 2 — Into the Bush The day begins with a guided walking safari of six to eight kilometres. Learn to track animals, forage for wild edibles, and read the landscape around you with the help of Onguma’s expert guides. A scenic bush breakfast is served out in the field before returning to camp for a late lunch. The afternoon is yours to rest before an interactive boma dinner and stargazing to end the day.
Day 3 — Departure An early morning walk before a final breakfast and departure.
Extending to 3 Nights
Guests who wish to extend their stay can add a third night, which includes an additional full day of exploration. Choose between a further six to eight kilometre guided walking safari through a riverbed, building on the skills and knowledge developed during the previous day, or a sunrise drive across the reserve. The day ends with sundowners and a three-course dinner. Departure follows an early morning walk and breakfast on the final morning.
After Trails Camp, guests are welcome to continue their stay at any of the Onguma camps for a different experience of the same reserve.
Activities
Daily guided walking safaris of six to eight kilometres are the core activity at Trails Camp. Sundowner drives and sunrise drives are available as alternatives or additions on extended stays. The walks are led by Onguma’s expert guides, trained under walking safari specialist Alan McSmith.
