Dining in the bush is the quintessential safari experience
At Onguma we love our bush meals. We invite you to experience the unique splendour of bush dining while you’re with us. As they say everything tastes better in the open air and this is even more true when enjoying your meal in the middle of the Namibian bush!
Whether it’s an early morning breakfast at the start of a brand new African day or dinner under a blanket of a million stars with the distance cries of animals in the air and the smells of a fire cooked meal wafting over from the pop-up bush kitchen. These are the genuine moments that make you feel truly connected to the wilderness.
We offer two venues to host these experiences namely “The Boma” for larger parties or “The Kraal” for a more intimate dining experience.
As defined in the Oxford Dictionary:
Noun – (In eastern and southern Africa) an enclosure, especially for animals.
The word Boma dates back to pre-colonial Africa and was used in many parts of the African Great Lakes region, including Central and Southern African. The word actually originates from Swahili and is traditionally known as an enclosure, a stockade or fort used to protect people’s livestock (usually sheep and cattle). It was typically built out of branches knit together.
The Boma has long become a part of the African culture, where a fire is lit, delicious foods are prepared and friends and family gather around the fire to eat, drink and share in storytelling.
As defined in the Oxford Dictionary:
Noun – Kraal (also spelled craal or kraul) is an Afrikaans and Dutch word, also used in South African English, for an enclosure for cattle or other livestock, located within a Southern African settlement or village surrounded by a fence of thorn-bush branches, a palisade, mud wall, or other fencing, roughly circular in form. It is similar to a boma in eastern or central Africa.
This enclosure has wonderful views over the plains and Fischers Pan where animals roam freely and the best sunsets on Onguma can be found. An open fire and comfortable beanbags complete the picture for a memorable experience.
