Sometimes the table is set in the middle of the bush, with the plains stretching out ahead, Fischer’s Pan catching the last of the light in the distance, and the sounds of the reserve settling in around you. Whether it is a breakfast cooked on an open fire at the start of a new African morning, or a three-course dinner under a sky full of Namibian stars, bush dining at Onguma is one of those experiences that connects you to the wilderness in a way that a dining room simply cannot replicate.

Onguma offers bush dining at two dedicated venues on the reserve, each with its own character and suited to different group sizes and occasions.

The Kraal — Intimate Dining with Views over Fischer's Pan

The Kraal is Onguma’s more intimate dining venue, designed for smaller groups who want a setting that feels personal and atmospheric. Surrounded by open views over the plains and Fischer’s Pan, with comfortable beanbags around an open fire and some of the finest sunsets on the reserve as a backdrop, it is a setting that does a great deal of the work before the food even arrives.

The word kraal comes from Afrikaans and Dutch, describing a traditional enclosure for livestock within a southern African settlement, typically circular and built from thorn-bush branches or other natural fencing. At Onguma, The Kraal carries that same sense of enclosure and warmth, a defined, fire-lit space in the middle of the wilderness where the outside world feels very far away.

The Boma — Communal Dining
for Larger Groups

The Boma is Onguma’s larger bush dining venue, well suited to groups of eight or more who want the full communal atmosphere of a traditional African gathering around the fire. The word boma originates from Swahili and has deep roots across central and southern Africa, describing an enclosure historically used to protect livestock and, over time, evolving into a cultural gathering space where food is shared, fires are lit, and stories are told.

At Onguma, The Boma brings that tradition to life. Scattered lanterns create an enchanting atmosphere, a crackling fire anchors the evening, and the team of enthusiastic staff and chefs prepare a generous al fresco meal on the open fire while guests settle in around them.

On offer is a generous spread of fresh seasonal fruits, cereals, yoghurt, pastries, and an assortment of cheeses and cold meat cuts. This is accompanied by a hot egg dish cooked by your team of private chefs on an open fire, with optional sides including bacon and tomatoes, and freshly baked bread taken straight from the coals. Welcome drinks, tea, coffee, water, and fruit juices are included throughout.

The bush breakfast pairs particularly well with an early morning guided bush walk on the reserve, making for a complete and memorable start to the day. It can equally be booked on its own for guests who simply want a morning out in the landscape.

Parties of up to seven guests are hosted at The Kraal. Groups of eight or more are hosted at The Boma.

Bush Dinner — An Evening Around the Fire Under the Namibian Sky

As the sun drops behind the treeline and the reserve shifts into its evening character, Onguma’s bush dinner experience begins with a short nature drive that follows the fading light before arriving at the venue for the evening. A crackling fire, fine wines, and the scent of food being prepared on an open fire set the tone immediately.

The evening unfolds around the communal fire on luxurious beanbags, with hanging lanterns overhead and the sounds of the reserve carrying in from the darkness beyond. Your hosts for the evening are Onguma’s team of chefs and staff, who prepare a three-course dinner on the open fire with the kind of enthusiasm that makes the meal feel like an occasion rather than a service.
