Safari Activities at Onguma Nature Reserve
A stay at Onguma is shaped entirely by how you want to spend your time. Game drives, walking activities, photographic experiences, bush dining, and spa treatments sit alongside Etosha excursions and adventure sleep-outs, giving every guest the freedom to build a safari that feels genuinely their own. Many of our most popular experiences have limited availability and are best arranged in advance, so we recommend discussing your preferred activities with the Onguma team when you book your stay. Below is a full overview of what is available during your visit.
Booking at least 30 days prior to arrival, is essential to avoid disappointment!

Private Game Drives on the Onguma Reserve
Onguma’s private game drives take place across 35,970 hectares of wilderness, with strict low-volume vehicle regulations ensuring that sightings are unhurried and uninterrupted. Lions and cheetahs are encountered regularly on the reserve, alongside elephants, rhinos, leopards, giraffes, and a wide range of plains game. Drives operate in the early morning and evening, guided by Onguma’s expert team trained under walking safari specialist Alan McSmith. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the conditions here are exceptional.
Etosha National Park Excursions
Onguma sits minutes from the Von Lindequist Gate, the closest access point to the Etosha Pan and one of the Park’s most sought-after entrances. Guests can join a guided half-day excursion led by an Onguma guide, or head in independently on a self-drive at their own pace. The gate opens at first light, putting you in prime position for the best of the morning game-viewing.
The Onkolo Hide and Onkolo Soundscapes
Built below ground level and positioned at eye level with one of the reserve’s most active waterholes, the Onkolo Hide offers a rare opportunity to observe wildlife in close, undisturbed proximity. This unique vantage point has enabled wildlife photographers to capture award-winning images. Making it one of the most celebrated photographic hides in Namibia.
Guided Bush Walks
On foot, the reserve reveals itself differently. Guided by Onguma’s expert team trained under Alan McSmith, bush walks move at a pace that invites closer attention: tracks in the dust, plant life, birdlife, and the quieter details of the landscape that a vehicle simply cannot access.
Trails Camp Walking Safari
Trails Camp is Onguma’s dedicated walking adventure and a separate experience entirely from the standard camp activities. Over two to three all-inclusive nights, small groups of up to eight guests follow guided walks of six to eight kilometres each morning, with hot tubs and attentive service waiting back at camp. For guests whose priority is time on foot in the bush, Trails Camp is built around exactly that.
The Dream Cruiser Adventure Sleep-Out
Spend a night in the bush aboard the Dream Cruiser, Onguma’s fully equipped adventure sleep-out. Away from the lights of camp, the reserve takes on a different character after dark, and the Dream Cruiser puts you directly in the middle of it. A genuinely memorable experience for guests who want something beyond the standard safari itinerary.
Bush Dining
Onguma’s bush dining experiences move the meal out into the landscape, from breakfast as the morning light settles over the reserve to dinner under an open Namibian sky. Atmospheric, unhurried, and a highlight of many guests’ stays.
Onguma Spa
The Onguma Spa offers a range of treatments designed to restore and unwind, with the sounds of the bush providing a backdrop that no city spa can replicate. A natural complement to early morning drives and active days in the reserve.
Children on Safari
Onguma’s children’s safari programme is designed to introduce younger guests to the bush in a way that is engaging, age-appropriate, and genuinely educational. Based primarily at Bush Camp, it gives families the freedom to explore the reserve together while ensuring children have experiences shaped around their curiosity.
