What Makes the Onkolo Hide Unique?

The name Onkolo comes from the Oshiwambo language, meaning “a place to hide” or “a hidden place”, and the experience lives up to it. By sitting below ground level, guests are removed from the sightline of approaching animals, which means wildlife behaves naturally and approaches the waterhole without any awareness of being observed. The result is a level of proximity and authenticity that is rarely possible from a vehicle or a conventional raised hide

The angles and quality of light available from inside the hide are exceptional, with multiple windows and carefully considered vantage points giving both amateur and professional photographers a range of creative options throughout the session. What Can You Expect to
See at the Onkolo Hide?

The waterhole overlooked by the Onkolo Hide is one of the most frequently visited on the reserve, drawing a reliable and varied cast of wildlife throughout the day. Elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and a wide variety of plains game visit regularly, while predators are an occasional and always extraordinary presence. The hide is particularly productive during the drier months of the year, when water sources across the reserve become fewer and animals concentrate around those that remain.

Birdlife at the waterhole is exceptional at any time of year, and the eye-level perspective makes for a quality of bird photography that is almost impossible to achieve from any other position on the reserve.

As with all wildlife experiences at Onguma, sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the consistent activity at this waterhole makes the Onkolo Hide one of the most reliably rewarding experiences on offer.

Onkolo Soundscapes — An Added Dimension to Every Hide Experience

Every guided Onkolo Hide session includes the Onkolo Soundscapes experience. Using a sensitive microphone positioned close to the waterhole and surrounding bushveld, the system captures sounds that would otherwise pass unnoticed, from approaching wildlife and bird calls to the quieter movements of the landscape.
